Use the hair at the sides and back as your reference. Check the shade in daylight, compare a physical sample where possible, and confirm the gray blend with the seller. Scalp tone and hair color are separate matches.
Five decisions to make before ordering
- Base hair shade. Compare your current sides and back, including lighter or darker areas near the temples.
- Undertone. Brown shades can look warmer or cooler. A dark-looking screen thumbnail is not enough to distinguish them.
- Gray percentage. The stated percentage describes the share of gray fibers in the hair mix; it is not your age or a density score.
- Gray distribution. Ask whether the gray is evenly blended or concentrated in certain areas, and whether the stock system can match what you want.
- Fiber type. Ask whether the gray fibers are human hair or synthetic; the answer affects which care and styling instructions apply.
How to check a shade
Ask for a current color ring or sample for the exact brand and range. Confirm whether the seller accepts a sample of your own hair.
Take clear front, side and back photos in daylight. Avoid filters and strong colored lighting.
Compare the actual unit beside your surrounding hair before cutting, coloring or wearing it.
What does a gray percentage mean?
A blend described as 20% gray is intended to contain a smaller share of gray hair than a 50% blend. It does not guarantee an identical look across sellers. Strand thickness, distribution, underlying shade and lighting all affect the result.
Do not transfer a color code from one brand to another without confirmation. Save the brand, exact model, shade code, gray percentage and fiber details so you can reorder the same specification.
Human gray or synthetic gray?
| Check | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Fiber composition | Does this exact color contain synthetic gray fibers, human gray hair or another blend? |
| Heat styling | Which tools and temperature limits apply to the complete blend? |
| Color services | Will a proposed dye or color product affect the dark hair and gray fibers differently? |
| Replacement orders | Can the same composition and gray distribution be ordered again? |
Lordhair offers human and synthetic gray options, depending on the system. Lyrical's French Lace page also describes shades mixed with synthetic gray. Do not assume that a general “human hair” description means every gray fiber in every variant is human hair.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a younger-looking shade instead of a matching shade. A uniformly dark top can contrast with gray temples.
- Changing both color and density without a plan. Check each choice against the surrounding hair; our density guide explains the second part.
- Trying to correct the color before checking return terms. Permanent changes can affect return eligibility. Contact the seller first if the delivered shade looks wrong.

Models and next steps
Review the options on the exact product page rather than choosing by brand alone:
- LaVivid Upgrade Mirage — check the selected color and variant.
- LaVivid Helios — compare density and shade together.
- Lyrical Full French Lace — confirm the gray-fiber composition.
Once you have a tentative match, ask your stylist to review it before ordering.
